The Chicago Symphony during the last decades of the twentieth
century came to be regarded by many as the finest orchestra in
the world, due in no small measure to its incredible brass
section, anchored on one end by trumpeter Adolph (Bud) Herseth,
and on the other end by the bass trombone and tuba duo of Edward
Kleinhammer and Harvey Phillips. It was an honor to study with
any of these outstanding musicians.
The picture below was sent to me by Douglas Yeo, bass trombonist
of the Boston Symphony, a long-time student and personal friend
of Ed Kleinhammer, and co-author with him of their book Mastering the
Trombone.
