Antonio Edmilson de Freitas and Martina
Hausman, six-day winners
From left to right are:
- Paul Bonnett, ATY race director, who himself managed to
accumulate 94.95 miles during the six days, while also directing
the race and doing a zillion things.
- Martina Hausmann, from Germany, winner of the women's 6-day
race. She came to set a German record, but missed it by about 30
miles, with a total of 428.75 miles, only 11 miles behind the
overall winner. The warm temperatures during the days proved to
be too much for her, but she made admirable progress during the
nighttime hours, moving steadily with a look of grim
determination on her face. After the first day, every time I saw
Martina, she looked like she was suffering.
- Mima, Paul's wife, who takes care of the Arizona Road Racers
merchandise (T-shirts and the like), stocks and tends the aid
stations, and does a million other things. She was also working
during the week of the race, including the evening of January 1,
when all who were able went to the post-race dinner at the
restaurant where Mima was working. Paul is a teacher, so was off
during this holiday week.
- Brazilian Antonio Edmilson de Freitas was the winner of the
6-day race, with 439.69 miles. From the first day he often
cheered, whooped, hollered, and otherwise showed his enthusiasm
as he crossed the yellow line. It was a pleasure to see his
always-smiling face throughout the race.
I absolutely loved the sculptures given out as
awards. Every participant received some variation of the same
general theme. The one I got is about four inches tall. (Pictured
at the top of the main page.) I'll always treasure it.
